Stitched with a Story: Quilting, Connection, and the “Something Extra” – Emily’s quilts
Emily and her mom, Brenda, have an amazing business creating quilts and fabric, in ways to celebrate Emily’s extra chromosome.
Since 2008, Emily has been designing quilts based on a basic 9 patch design – starting in the middle and working her way out – to create the design. Each quilt celebrates others with disabilities too. Sometimes the “something extra” of a person is visible; sometimes you have to get to know the person until you see it.
Emily’s fabrics are made from watercolor paintings created by Emily, then by adding real flowers – they take photos of the combinations and have the photo printed on fabric.
Emily has made approximately 400 throw and baby size quilts and every quilt has a story. A few of those stories will be shared at this Sunday at the Museum.
Over the years Masterpiece Quilts have given 10% of their proceeds to different organizations, but over the past several years they have been donating to Ekisa in Uganda. Ekisa is a ministry to support people with disabilities so they can thrive in their communities and families. Brenda has been to Uganda, so it seemed fitting to help them out. They have watched Ekisa grow from a small orphanage to a wonderful center to help those with disabilities stay in their own families.
Emily will bring some of her quilts and fabrics for us to see and appreciate, as we learn more and get to hear the stories of various quilts Emily has made.
