STITCHED ACROSS TIME: STARTING YOUR TIMESPAN QUILT | Sept 30

Timespan quilts are started by one or more makers and then completed by others - usually years down the road.
Blocks and tops that have not been completed as quilts are perfect candidates to become Timespan quilts, like those in the main gallery - created by Anne Olsen.
The same knowledge needed to create Timespan quilts can be applied to restoring and repairing antique quilts. This one day intensive covers the knowledge needed, and then gives each participant guidance and feedback as they work on a plan for the project they want to work on.
Things you will learn:
How do you clean it? Get rid of some smells? Repair frayed binding or pulled seams? Or should you do those kinds of repairs?
If you don't know the history of the quilt and you want to get a better idea how old it might be, and some interesting details about it - we will talk about how you can research it, through materials in our Sandra Dallas Library. Learn about the basic ways of identifying fabrics and colors to find the approximate time period of the quilt. Check out the pattern used in the blocks, and in the quilt stitching. What can you find out from it? It is amazing how the details come together to help you figure out how you want to proceed with your preservation.
Choose 1-3 quilts or quilt block sets to bring to this intensive. Ask questions and see what family or previous owner information you can gather ahead of time. During the workshop, each participant will choose one of their projects to focus on for the remainder of the class.
This class will include several hours of informational presentations followed by a workshop session, during which participants will apply the concepts presented in class to develop ideas for their individual projects with guidance and feedback of experienced museum volunteers and staff.
