Free Motion Quilting with Rita Meyerhoff



Techniques

  1.     Basic free motion quilting and designing
  2.     Walking foot skills
  3.     Marking a quilt top and layering
  4.     Marking and quilting with stencils
Supply List will be emailed to you upon registration.

Notions and fabric

  1.       Reference book of your choice
  2.       4 yards of 45 to 50-inch-wide muslin
  3.       Cotton batting (my preference is Hobbs Heirloom 80/20)
  4.       50 wt cream/ecru thread
  5.       90/14 quilting needles
  6.       Quilting gloves of your choice (my preference is Machingers)
  7.       6 x 24-inch ruler
  8.       12 ½ inch square ruler
  9.       Water soluble marker
  10.       Basting spray (June Tailor’s or Sullivan’s preferred) (not 505 Spray and Fix)
  11.       Sewing Machine and Manual (ability to drop feed dogs and needle down capable are helpful)
  12.     Walking foot for your machine
  13.     Darning foot for your machine
  14.     Gel pen and drawing pad (available for sale in class)

Prep For 1st class:

  1.    Cut 2 pieces of 50x50 (width of fabric) inch muslin pieces. Do not layer these two, wait until class.
  2.     Cut remainder of fabric (at least enough for 4 practice sandwiches) into approximately 12 x12 inch pieces and layer into sandwiches (muslin-batting-muslin).  These will be used for the first class. Use basting spray or press to hold sandwiches together. 

 

BE SURE TO USE BASTING SPRAY IN OPEN AREA.  OUTSIDE IS PROBABLY BEST!


Class is limited to 6 attendees so each student has their own table to work at, allowing for the 6' of distancing for health reasons.


Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: Learn the basics of free-motion quilting and walking foot grid work, including choosing thread, batting, and needles. You will learn lots of designs and the basics of stitching on your quilt top using free motion quilting as well as how to adapt stencils as quilting motifs. This class will help you gain confidence in your quilting and avoid some of the pitfalls common to free motion quilting. Learn how to decide what style of quilting enhances your project best depending on how your project will be used. You will have a chance to try your skills with stitching allover quilting, quilting borders and sashing, and background fillers, straight line stitching and grids.
Materials Included: Student to provide own materials
Requirements: Sewing machine in good working order Knowledge of how to operate your sewing machine
Instructor: Rita Meyerhoff
Instructor Bio: Rita is a well-known local quilter with lots of experience and knowledge to share and cannot wait for you to join her on your quilting adventure.
