Kid’s
Education
Quilting Bee
RMQM hosts a quilting bee for girls and boys nine years and older
on the second Saturday of each month at 10:00am in the education room. (Parents
are welcome.) This gathering is designed to be informal and fun! All materials
are supplied. Members will be taught the basics of using a sewing machine and
creating a quilt, either traditional or contemporary. Occasional field trips
will be planned. Please call the office at 303-277-0377 to sign up.

RMQM offers classes to children and youth. Class dates and
times are by arrangement to meet the needs of the students. Please call the

one of the exhibits currently on display.

Button Collage (Hand Sewing)—Level 1
The students will learn to use a basic running stitch and a straight
stitch while hand-sewing a felt design onto a felt square, and
then sewing the felt square onto a small tote. The scout will also
learn about the three different kinds of buttons and how to sew
them onto fabric. 2 hours, $9.00 per student, all materials are

Four-Patch Block (Hand Sewing)—Level
1
Students will create hand-pieced four-patch blocks which
can be finished into a decorative pillow for displaying pins or medals,
or used for a pincushion. Several blocks may also be combined
to make a quilt top. 2 hours, $10.00 per student, all materials
are provided. (Class size: 3-8 students) Applies to Hobbies,Patchwork,

Butterfly Fabric Collage
(Fusing, machine sewing)—Level 1
Students will select fabrics, trace a pattern, and
cut out the appropriate fabric shapes to fuse into an instant
appliqué block design using a steam iron and press cloth.
Designs may be embellished by machine embroidery or with buttons,
ribbon, yarn, glitter, and beads as the student desires. The
blocks can be used later to create a quilt or wall hanging.
Construction of a typical quilt will be discussed and demonstrated.
2 hours, $10.00 per student, all materials are provided. (Class

Little Scrappy Quilt (rotary
cutting, machine sewing, hand sewing)—Level 2
The
students will make a small quilt using many different fabrics—each
square is a different color or the student my fussy-cut particular
motifs to appear in the squares. Students must provide their
own fabric, batting, and backing for their quilt (supply list provided
upon registration). The students may bring their own sewing machine
or use the museum’s machines.
4 hours, $15 per student. (Class

Little Strip Pieced Quilt
with Fusible Appliqué (rotary
cutting, machine sewing, fusing)—Level 2
Students
will learn how to piece and counter-cut strips of fabric to
create a quick and easy quilt top. Additional designs will
be appliquéd by fusing with a steam iron. Students must provide
their own fabric, batting, and backing for their quilt (supply
list provided upon registration). The students may bring their
own sewing machine or use the museum’s machines. 4 hours,
$15 per student. (Class size: 3-8 students) Applies to Art

Traditional Sampler Quilt
(rotary cutting, machine sewing)—Level 3
A sampler quilt is one in which each block is different. A
four-block sampler quilt will be made in this class. The blocks
will include Bowtie, Double Four-Patch, Simple Nine-Patch, and
Churn Dash (Monkey Wrench). Students must provide their own fabric,
batting, and backing for their quilt (supply list provided upon
registration). The students may bring their own sewing machine
or use the museum’s machines. 3 hours, $15 per student. (Class
size 3-8 students) Applies to Art in the Home, Art to
Wear, Folk Arts, Doing Hobbies, Drawing and Painting, Yarn and

Stamped Sampler Quilt (stamping
or stenciling, rotary cutting, machine sewing)—Level 3
Students
will decorate fabircs with stamped or stenciled designs, then
use the fabric to create a four-block sampler quilt. Students
must provide their own fabric, batting, and backing for their quilt
(supply list provided upon registration). The students may bring
their own sewing machine or use the museum’s machines. 4
hours, $15 per student. (Class size 3-8 students) Applies to

Your Own Creation—Level
4
Students will
design, piece, quilt, and finish their own quilt.
3 hours, $15
for guidance in getting started with pattern and fabric selection,
piecing instruction, layering and quilting. Further
classes on as-needed basis, 3 hours at $15 per student. (Class

Individual Instruction—All
Levels
From
beginner to advanced, the students will be given individualized
instruction to help move them along on their creative journey.
Students provide their own materials, and may use their own sewing
machine or the museum’s machines. 3 hour sessions, $15 per
student (Class size 1-4 students).

SKILL LEVELS – Class skill levels have been
identified as follows to ensure the students’ success as much
as possible.
Level 1 Beginner
Little
or no previous knowledge of sewing
Level 2 Experienced
Beginner Familiar with hand sewing, threading
a needle, safety rules for cutting and ironing. May have minimal
knowledge of machine sewing.
Level 3 Intermediate
Uses
a rotary cutter safely and accurately with minimal assistance. Knows
the basics of operating a sewing machine, including winding the bobbin.
Maintains ¼” seam allowance without help. May have made
an item of clothing, tote, or something for the home.
Level 4 Advanced
All
basic skills are mastered. Knows how to machine piece with straight seams,
adjust the seam allowance for better accuracy. Knows how to square up
a block. Tries more challenging patterns and designs. Most blocks
and designs come out similar sizes. Ready to design their own quilt block
or quilting pattern. |
